Google is deepening its partnership with the U.S. military by launching Agent Designer, a new low-code platform within GenAI.mil that allows civilian and military personnel to create custom AI agents through natural language commands. The announcement, made on March 9, positions Google as an increasingly strategic partner to the Pentagon at a time when rival Anthropic is fighting a legal battle with the Department of Defense over military AI usage.

What Agent Designer Does

Agent Designer represents Google’s effort to make AI accessible to military users without requiring extensive programming expertise. The platform enables users to build agents that can:

  • Automate repetitive administrative tasks
  • Take meeting notes and generate action items
  • Create step-by-step project plans
  • Streamline multi-step workflows

“These AI agents will assist with tasks like taking meeting notes, creating action items, and creating step-by-step plans for effective project planning,” Google stated. Importantly, the company noted that these agents will handle only unclassified tasks, addressing potential security concerns.

GenAI.mil Growth

The launch comes as GenAI.mil has reached significant scale. The platform now boasts over 1 million unique users, a substantial increase from its initial deployment. Google plans to expand this user base further through regular training sessions conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO).

A Strategic Divergence

The timing of Google’s announcement is noteworthy. While the Pentagon has labeled Anthropic a “supply-chain risk” due to disagreements over military AI applications, Google is actively expanding its defense partnerships. Anthropic has filed a lawsuit challenging this designation, and employees from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and other companies have signed a letter supporting the AI startup.

This creates a stark contrast in the industry: Google is strengthening its military AI ties while competitors face regulatory pushback. With Agent Designer, Google isn’t merely a technology vendor to the Department of Defense—it’s becoming a strategic partner in the military’s AI transformation.

The Bigger Picture

This move reflects a broader trend of major tech companies navigating the complex terrain of defense AI contracts. As the Department of Defense increasingly integrates artificial intelligence into its operations, platforms like GenAI.mil represent the front lines of this expansion. Google’s low-code approach could accelerate AI adoption across military branches, potentially setting a new standard for how defense agencies implement generative AI tools.
