OpenAI is once again in “code red” mode—and this time, the competitive pressure is coming from Anthropic’s Claude. The ChatGPT maker is making major strategic changes after watching rival Anthropic capture significant ground in the developer market.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI senior executives recently told employees during an all-hands meeting that the company must focus on core products and business tools instead of experimental projects. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, emphasized that the company cannot miss the current opportunity because of “side quests.”

“We cannot miss this moment because we are distracted by side quests. We really have to nail productivity in general and particularly productivity on the business front,” Simo told employees, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The Claude Threat

The urgency stems from Anthropic’s remarkable success with Claude Code and related developer tools. Software engineers and enterprise customers have embraced Claude enthusiastically, with many developers spending extended periods testing and integrating the system into their workflows. OpenAI executives have described this success as a “wake-up call.”

The competitive pressure is particularly intense in the software development segment, which has become one of the most valuable battlegrounds in the AI race. Claude’s strong performance in coding tasks, combined with robust developer tooling, has made it the preferred choice for many engineering teams.

OpenAI’s shift represents a significant change in strategy. Previously, CEO Sam Altman described the company’s approach as similar to “betting on a series of startups” within the organization—this helped position OpenAI as an early AI leader but also stretched resources thin.

The company has launched or explored products ranging from Sora video generation to hardware concepts, browser experiments, and e-commerce features inside ChatGPT.

The Response

To regain ground, OpenAI has already released an updated version of its Codex coding tool along with GPT-5.4, designed for professional use. However, the company acknowledges it must move quickly to reclaim leadership in the developer segment.
