Apple is preparing to make its biggest leap in artificial intelligence with a complete overhaul of Siri, the voice assistant that has been a staple of its ecosystem since 2011. At WWDC 2026 (scheduled for June 8–12), Apple will unveil a transformed Siri that evolves from a traditional voice assistant into a systemwide AI agent with deep integration across applications, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
From Voice Assistant to AI Agent
The redesigned Siri will be capable of controlling other apps and features of iOS and macOS with unprecedented depth. Users will be able to complete complex tasks using their personal data gathered from emails, messages, and notes. The assistant will also gain the ability to summarize daily news from Apple News and provide more detailed responses sourced from the web, including summaries, bullet points, and images—positioning it as a direct competitor to Perplexity and Google Gemini.
Apple is testing a dedicated Siri app that will provide users with a conversational interface similar to Apple Messages. This dedicated space will allow users to find previous interactions, search through past chats, start new conversations, switch between voice and text modes, and upload documents and photos for analysis.
New Interface and Integration
Siri will remain accessible through voice commands and the iPhone’s power button, but the new design includes several enhancements. The company is exploring placing Siri at the top of an iPhone’s screen within Dynamic Island, prompting users with a “Search or Ask” interface. When activated, the Siri interface will expand into a translucent panel that can be further expanded to continue conversations or make additional inquiries.
The expansion extends to Spotlight search, which will be replaced by Siri to access more types of data. Built-in apps will gain an “Ask Siri” toggle in menus, making it easier for users to request information about highlighted text or pull up related emails.
Competition in the AI Assistant Space
This move represents Apple’s response to the rapidly evolving AI assistant market. Competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude have set new expectations for AI-powered assistance. By transforming Siri into a more capable AI agent, Apple aims to reclaim ground lost to these newer platforms while leveraging its unique advantage: deep integration across the Apple ecosystem of devices and services.
The timing is particularly significant as the European Union’s AI Act comes into full implementation with transparency and risk management requirements. Apple will need to navigate these regulations while delivering features compelling enough for users to perceive a real leap forward.
