Finland and Estonia have joined forces with defense AI company NestAI to accelerate the development of interoperable military artificial intelligence that can operate seamlessly across allied forces. The partnership was formalized through a Letter of Intent signed by representatives from the Finnish Ministry of Defence, the Estonian Defence Forces, and NestAI.
The agreement establishes a framework for knowledge sharing, joint development, training, and technical cooperation between the two nations and the European AI defense lab. The collaboration aims to create sovereign AI models for planning operations and enabling uncrewed systems.
Building Allied AI Capabilities
“European defence forces need AI systems that work together across national boundaries and continue to learn after deployment,” said NestAI executive chairman Peter Sarlin. The partnership focuses on several key areas including autonomous and unmanned systems, command and control support solutions, and adaptive machine-learning artificial intelligence.
The Letter of Intent, signed on June 30, 2026, carries no financial commitment but instead sets up a framework for shared research and development. This approach allows both nations to leverage each other’s expertise without immediate substantial investment, focusing on interoperability and technical cooperation.
