Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs have unveiled a joint approach to “bioresilience”—using AI capabilities to prevent, detect, and respond to biological threats. The strategy, announced July 16, 2026, represents one of the most comprehensive AI biosecurity frameworks from a major tech company.

The global biosecurity landscape is rapidly evolving, according to Google DeepMind. Shifting natural ecosystems, global travel, and the potential misuse of AI require greater vigilance—yet AI also offers critical tools for response. The approach aims to help governments, scientists, and biosecurity experts build a more resilient world.
“We’re making our AI models and agents available to trusted partners to support progress across three key areas: prevention, detection and response,” the blog post states.
Prevention: Safeguarding AI Models
On the prevention front, Google DeepMind follows a four-step safety process for models like Gemini: threat modeling, evaluations, mitigations, and monitoring. The company partners with in-house biologists, security experts, and external partners to understand potential threats and build safeguards.
A notable innovation involves adapting SynthID watermarking technology to biology—potentially helping DNA synthesis providers screen for AI-generated biological sequences.
Detection: Accelerating Pathogen Surveillance
For detection, the company is applying AlphaEvolve—an AI-powered coding agent—to optimize algorithms used in metagenomic sequencing. This optimization makes DNA analysis cheaper and faster, enabling more effective disease tracking worldwide.
The team is also exploring how AlphaGenome and Protein Function annotation could identify pathogens from sequence data, detecting novel patterns and emerging threats faster than traditional methods.
Response: Accelerating Countermeasure Design
Building on AlphaFold’s scientific impact, Google DeepMind is granting trusted researchers access to its latest AI systems to accelerate vaccine and therapeutic design. Isomorphic Labs has established a dedicated unit to rapidly deploy its drug design engine during novel outbreaks, working with governments and global health authorities.
Partnership Network
The program has already advanced more than 15 partnerships with government bodies, biosecurity organizations, and research groups over the past 12 months. This aligns with the company’s Frontier Safety Framework for managing Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) risks.
