The Offer

Eligible researchers will receive ChatGPT Team or Enterprise subscriptions, normally costing $25 per user monthly for Team and significantly more for Enterprise. The program covers both the research use case and includes API credits for those building research applications on OpenAI’s platform.

The application process emphasizes research impact and reproducibility — applicants must describe how they’ll share findings and open-source any tools developed. This creates a built-in pipeline: researchers become dependent on OpenAI’s ecosystem, then contribute back code and papers that validate OpenAI’s technology.

Critics Sound the Alarm

Not everyone is celebrating. Analysts have characterized the initiative as a “strategic land grab” on research workflows. The concern is straightforward: researchers who build workflows around ChatGPT become locked into OpenAI’s ecosystem, influencing which tools they recommend to students, which platforms they publish benchmarks on, and which AI capabilities they prioritize in grant proposals.

But OpenAI’s sheer scale — 100,000 researchers is roughly the population of a major research university — represents an unmatched commitment.

What remains unclear is long-term dependency. After the free period ends, will researchers have the budget to continue?
