Anthropic is no longer content with renting compute. On August 10, 2026, the company announced Theseus Infrastructure, a joint venture with Macquarie Asset Management and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, to develop, operate, and lease purpose-built US data centers with Anthropic as the anchor tenant.
From Leasing to Co-Owning
The move marks a strategic pivot for Anthropic. Until now, the company has relied on leasing capacity from cloud providers and data center operators. Theseus represents a vertical integration play—building infrastructure specifically designed for AI workloads rather than adapting existing facilities.
Macquarie-managed funds and GIC will own the majority of equity for each project, with Anthropic committing to long-term lease agreements. The initial focus is on the United States, with facilities purpose-built to support Anthropic’s growing compute needs.
Paying for the Grid
Perhaps the most notable commitment: Anthropic pledged to cover 100% of local grid-upgrade costs required to power its facilities. More unusually, the company also committed to covering any increases in consumer electricity prices that result from its data center operations—a direct response to growing community opposition to AI infrastructure expansion.
This comes amid a wave of local resistance: over 500 US jurisdictions have now implemented some form of data center restriction or moratorium, as reported in Monday’s coverage.
The Bigger Picture
The $1.5 billion Ode joint venture with Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman, announced in May and now fielding 100 engineers, targets enterprise implementation. Theseus tackles the upstream problem: where the compute actually lives.
For an AI lab still fighting a Pentagon blacklist, contesting export controls on its Fable 5 model, and preparing for a potential IPO, controlling its infrastructure stack reduces dependency on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure—while signaling to investors that it’s thinking at industrial scale.
The question now is whether other AI labs will follow suit, or whether Anthropic’s sovereign infrastructure play gives it a decisive edge in the race for compute capacity.
