Google announced the transfer of its Agent2Agent Protocol (A2A) to the newly established Agentic AI Foundation, marking a significant step toward industry-wide standardization of multi-agent AI communication. The move represents one of the most substantial open-standards initiatives in the AI agent space to date.

The Agent2Agent Protocol, first introduced by Google earlier this year, enables AI agents to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate across different platforms and providers. By placing the protocol under an independent foundation, Google aims to prevent vendor lock-in and encourage broader adoption across the AI industry.

The Agentic AI Foundation will govern the protocol’s development, maintain technical specifications, and oversee certification processes for implementations. Founding members include Google, Anthropic, Microsoft, and several other major AI labs—a coalition that signals unusual industry consensus on the need for standardization.

Multi-agent AI systems represent the next frontier in artificial intelligence development. Unlike single-model deployments, agentic systems require sophisticated coordination protocols to manage task delegation, context sharing, and outcome reconciliation across multiple specialized agents. The absence of standard protocols has created fragmented ecosystems where agents from different providers often cannot interoperate effectively.
