OpenAI has announced that healthcare organizations can now connect their Epic electronic health record environments to ChatGPT for Healthcare, enabling clinicians to query patient data through natural language.
Integration Details
The integration allows clinicians to ask questions across appointment notes, laboratory results, medications, and specialist documentation. Access is read-only—ChatGPT cannot write anything back to the health record, addressing a key concern around AI in clinical settings.
A separate Healthcare Public Data plugin expands ChatGPT’s capabilities by wiring it into nine official sources including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, RxNorm, and CMS Coverage. This gives clinicians access to both patient-specific data and authoritative medical literature within a single conversation.

Healthcare AI has long faced resistance due to privacy concerns and regulatory complexity.
