OpenEvidence, the AI-powered search engine designed specifically for physicians, has raised $250 million in Series D funding at a $15 billion valuation—representing a 25% premium over its $12 billion valuation from January 2026. The round was co-led by Thrive Capital and DST Global, with participation from hospital systems seeking to expand their AI capabilities.
The funding brings OpenEvidence’s total capital raised to approximately $700 million over the past 12 months, making it one of the best-funded healthcare AI companies globally. The company has become the de facto AI assistant for U.S. physicians, with its platform processing millions of clinical queries daily.
Why Doctors Are Adopting AI Search
Unlike general-purpose AI assistants, OpenEvidence is built specifically for medical use cases. The platform indexes peer-reviewed research, clinical guidelines, drug interactions, and case studies, allowing physicians to get evidence-based answers in seconds rather than minutes or hours of manual searching.
“The difference between OpenEvidence and ChatGPT for medical queries is the difference between a medical textbook and a conversation with a resident,” said one physician at a major Boston hospital. “It knows the literature, the guidelines, and it cites sources.”
The company reports that over 200,000 physicians across the United States now use the platform regularly, with adoption accelerating following the integration of Claude and GPT-6 powered search capabilities earlier this year.
Strategic Implications
The investment from hospital systems is particularly notable—it signals a shift toward vertical integration in healthcare AI, where providers are no longer just users but stakeholders in the platforms they deploy.
OpenEvidence is also reportedly exploring potential acquisition opportunities, with compute access emerging as a key motivation. The company has been expanding its infrastructure to handle the exponential growth in query volume, and strategic partnerships could provide runway for its ambitious “medical superintelligence” roadmap.
